I find that this is a funny name for a market as it is open all day. It is actually a very large collection of buildings in downtown Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. There are several aisles of textiles in one of the huge buildings. Upstairs there are people selling tribal jewelry and the usual manufactured clothes you would find anywhere else in Asia. Of course the textile area is my favorite.
Laos is known for its glorious handwoven silks in very unusual (at least I think so) color combinations. I get swept away by the color and feel of them and usually end up buying much more than I need. But how much is enough anyway?
Most of my favorite stalls selling hmong items are run by family members of a large group of people who embroider and sew the finished pieces. Every stitch in my favorite story quilts is sewn by hand.
